Harmony in Leadership through Motivation and Reflection

This last Monday, I was due to deliver my 1st Motivational Map debrief in Greek (!), something that admittedly was stressing me a bit.

Yes, I am Greek. Yes, I speak and write and understand Greek fluently. But professionally, I grew up in Ireland, so all my trainings, most of my books and the vocabulary I am most comfortable with from a business perspective are in English.

As I was preparing for that debrief, I was reminded of a few important motivators of myself, about the process I enjoy following, and of some essential values for effective and productive leadership.

The preparation for the debrief gave me a big motivation boost, I re-acknowledged how important quality is for me. I spent quite some time reviewing and analyzing data, looking through my notes, taking new ones, communicating with Sue and Heath, translating!

And as I was listening to my mapper reflecting on his personal and professional journey, I could hear his top motivators being described and indicated in his words, becoming clear.

Some important leadership values surfaced too, values we all know, talk about, even ‘advertise’ in a way.

We know leadership is supposed to be like that, but is it really?

What does it take for a leader to ‘being’ the example of these values?

He spoke about ownership, trust, empowerment, common goal, vision, commitment, encouragement, recognition & appreciation.

These are the values that bring ‘harmony’ in me, he said.

These are the values that bring harmony in leadership, I would add. Would you agree?

What brings harmony in your organization?

What brings harmony in your leadership team?

Motivational Maps is a powerful tool that helps us identify and name what is important to us and our team members. It can be the first step towards finding harmony within our organisations.

Looking back on this Motivation Map debrief, I caught myself smiling while watching the video recording, a clear demonstration of one of my 3 top motivators: Expert!

What’s yours? What motivates you the most?

Another thing, I proudly observed were two components of the Thinking Environment emerging in his reflection, appreciation & encouragement.

How often do you appreciate and encourage your team?

How often do we appreciate ourselves even?

Who are those lovely people who encourages us to keep going?

This Motivational Maps debrief experience highlighted to me the connection between motivation and appreciation, performance and encouragement.

It emphasized the values that bring harmony in leadership.

Just one debrief that reignited my excitement for the work ahead, more Motivational Maps, more awareness, more research, more learning.

A very productive week start indeed!
